RODOLFO MESQUITA AND THE MONSTROUS MASKS OF JOY, 2013.
The work of artist Rodolfo Mesquita is freely interpreted through film language in this short. Pedro Severien films the artist in his studio, as well as various situations experienced by actors. In a series of guided improvisations, scenes are provoked by the paintings and drawings. “It’s like we consumed the work of Rodolfo as a drug, and the film is an expression of the effect, it’s what we felt when processing the characters and places he has created,” says Severien. Mesquita often portrays humans in their ridiculous and erratic condition, but the director feels free to adapt this state of mind to his own vision.
